The literacy rate continues to rise around the world, but 750 million people still cannot read or write properly, according to Unesco. Unesco measures constant progress in this field year after year, but the figures hide strong inequalities: sub-Saharan Africa and South and West Asia are the hardest hit and in two thirds of cases, women are concerned.

That is why, as a first action to fight illiteracy, we financed a library in an elementary school located in Abidjan, Ivory Coast. We are currently in discussion with the local authorities to set up an extra-curricular system to reduce illiteracy, raise environmental awareness and inform young people about sexuality. Since 2021, Semlex Ivory Coast has been working on a project to finance a new elementary school in Abidjan.
