From May 9 to 20, 2022, the 15th Conference of the Parties (COP) of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification will address crucial issues with the aim of taking action against land degradation. This phenomenon is both harmful to biodiversity and local populations. The UN also estimates that 40% of land is degraded in the world. In 2021, the well-being of approximately 3.2 billion people was affected [1].
The theme chosen for this event is “Lands. Life. Heritage: From a precarious world to a prosperous future”. As the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) explains in its press release, it is a call to action to change things and enable present and future generations to continue to enjoy the benefits of our planet. The UNCCD explains in particular that one billion hectares of degraded land will be restored by 2030.
Nine African heads of state, French President Emmanuel Macron and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen will take part in the debates to agree on a series of measures to stop the increase in desertification.
Africa being the continent most affected by desertification, it was important that COP15 take place in one of the African countries. This year, it takes place in Abidjan, Ivory Coast.
