In Madagascar, digital technology is playing an increasingly important role in the daily lives of young people and families. Knowing how to use digital tools and understanding both the opportunities they offer and the risks they may involve has become essential for learning, communicating, creating and developing greater independence.
As part of its commitment to education and the development of digital skills, Semlex For Education has supported the implementation of the EFijery project in Madagascar through the NGO ILO. This initiative aims to help young people and their families adopt a more responsible, safe, critical and constructive approach to digital technology.
Learning to Better Understand and Use Digital Technology
EFijery takes a comprehensive approach that combines digital education, prevention, creativity and empowerment.
The project enables participants to progressively develop their digital skills and acquire the right habits to deal with risks encountered online. Topics covered include online safety, cyberbullying, misinformation, inappropriate content, scams, and the mechanisms that can contribute to excessive use of screens and social media.
Beyond prevention, EFijery encourages young people to become active and informed users of digital technology. They learn how to search for, verify, analyse and use information critically, while also discovering how technology can serve as a tool for creativity, learning and self-expression.
Learning Tailored to Each Age Group
For children aged 8 to 14, the main objective is to discover digital technology in a fun and safe environment. Activities help them become familiar with the Internet and key digital tools while learning how to identify potentially risky situations.
Creativity also plays an important role in their learning. Digital drawing, audio messages, short videos and other projects allow them to discover how digital tools can be used to create and share positive content.
For young people aged 15 and above, the programme goes further by developing skills that can be applied in their education, professional careers or entrepreneurial activities. Topics covered include office software, online research, social media management, content creation and digital marketing.
These learning opportunities aim to strengthen their independence and initiative, while also enabling them to apply their skills to concrete projects, entrepreneurial activities or local initiatives.
Involving Parents in Digital Education
Because supporting young people cannot be limited to activities aimed directly at them, EFijery also involves parents.
The project helps parents better understand the digital tools, platforms and services their children use on a daily basis. This greater understanding helps strengthen their educational and preventive role while encouraging dialogue about the use of digital technology.
Particular attention is also given to health and well-being. Young people and parents are encouraged to reflect on the influence that media and social networks can have on eating habits, self-image, behaviour and, more broadly, lifestyle choices.
Making Digital Technology a Tool for Sharing and Opportunity
Finally, EFijery encourages interaction between generations. Joint activities allow young people, parents and other family members to share their knowledge, support one another and develop digital projects together.
This intergenerational dimension helps make digital technology not only an individual tool, but also a space for knowledge sharing, dialogue and collaboration.
Through the EFijery project, Semlex For Education contributes to the development of a more inclusive and responsible digital culture in Madagascar. The objective is to provide young people and their families with the knowledge and skills they need to better understand the digital world and turn it into a genuine tool for education, creativity, independence and social development.
