In a constantly evolving world, access to education remains a major challenge for millions of children across the globe. According to recent UNESCO data, approximately 250 million children are currently deprived of quality education, with this number having increased in recent years. This alarming situation calls for urgent action from the international community to safeguard the future of these young individuals.
Among the reasons behind this troubling increase is the rise of the Taliban in Afghanistan, which has led to the ban on girls attending secondary schools. This restriction has not only deprived a significant number of children of their fundamental right to education but has also contributed to the overall rise in the number of out-of-school children.
However, the current situation also underscores the stagnation of global education efforts. UNESCO data shows that education is in crisis, with millions of children being left behind. According to Audrey Azoulay, the Director-General of UNESCO, concrete measures must be taken urgently to reverse this concerning trend.
Since the adoption of the Sustainable Development Goals in 2015, progress has been made in education. The percentage of children completing their primary education has increased by three points, reaching a total of 87%. Furthermore, the proportion of youth completing their secondary education has risen by 5 points, reaching 58%. Nevertheless, these figures indicate that there is still much work to be done to ensure that every child has access to quality education.
Access to education is a fundamental right enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. However, in many regions of the world, this right is far from being a reality for numerous children. It is imperative that all countries intensify their efforts to create equitable educational opportunities, regardless of gender, ethnic origin, or geographical location.
